Electric vehicle savings challenged by high energy costs
The economic advantages of electric vehicles are being challenged by hidden costs related to energy pricing and efficiency. While electricity is often marketed as a cheaper alternative to fuel, the actual cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for domestic charging is significantly higher than the base energy price. According to ARERA, taxes and system charges can double the cost, potentially raising the real price to between 0.55 and 0.60 euros per kWh.
Additional financial burdens include energy dispersion and infrastructure investments. Tests by the German automobile club ADAC indicate that using a domestic wallbox results in energy losses of 6% to 10% during the conversion from alternating current to direct current. Furthermore, the initial investment required for installing home charging infrastructure adds to the total cost of ownership.
