Electric vehicles face increased tire wear due to mass

Electric vehicles (EVs) may experience significantly faster tire wear compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. Research indicates varying degrees of increased consumption, with Michelin suggesting wear could be up to 20 percent higher, while OECD data cited by German media suggests a more modest increase of 3 to 8 percent.

The primary driver of this accelerated wear is the increased mass of electric vehicles due to heavy battery packs. Emissions Analytics estimates that every additional 450 kilograms of vehicle weight results in approximately 20 percent higher tire consumption. Additionally, the high torque and rapid acceleration characteristic of EVs place greater physical stress on the tires.

To mitigate these issues, drivers should consider reinforced tire compounds specifically designed for the higher weight and performance demands of electric cars. Proper tire selection involves checking vehicle technical specifications found on B-pillars, glove compartments, or fuel filler flaps to ensure correct sizing and suitability for the vehicle type.
