Electric vehicles face motion sickness and emergency exit challenges

Electric vehicles (EVs) present unique challenges regarding passenger comfort and emergency safety. Research indicates that the quiet nature of electric motors can cause motion sickness due to a sensory conflict; the brain struggles to predict movement without the auditory and vibrational cues provided by internal combustion engines. Additionally, high levels of regenerative braking can cause repetitive forward and backward oscillations that increase nausea for passengers.

Regarding safety, the trend toward flush-mounted door handles in EVs has raised concerns about emergency exits during power failures or collisions. While Hyundai and Kia models are designed to allow passengers to use standard interior door handles to exit even when power is lost, Tesla models typically require the use of a specific emergency lever. Furthermore, while some handles can be manually deployed, external rescuers may still face difficulties opening locked doors if the electronic locking systems fail due to battery depletion.
