Electric vehicles face rising maintenance costs and varying regional identification standards

The aging first generation of modern electric vehicles (EVs) faces economic challenges regarding maintenance and identification. Rupert Helbaher of Bosch Mobility Aftermarket warned that the high cost of repairing high-voltage systems could impact the used EV market, as battery replacement costs may eventually exceed the total market value of older vehicles.

Beyond battery degradation, repairs for EVs can be more complex and expensive than internal combustion engine vehicles due to the need for specialized diagnostics, sensor calibration, and software reprogramming following accidents. Plug-in hybrids are also noted for potential battery degradation due to frequent charging cycles.

In various European regions, special license plates are being used to identify low-emission vehicles and grant specific benefits. For example, in Norway, these plates facilitate access to reduced tolls and ferry fares. Other countries like Austria, Romania, and Ukraine use distinct color schemes on plates to distinguish EVs, which can grant advantages such as free parking or access to public transport lanes.
