Electric vehicles overtake gasoline cars in EU as Poland lags
Between January and August this year, electric vehicle (EV) registrations in the European Union surpassed gasoline-powered car registrations for the first time, with EVs accounting for approximately 22 percent of the 7.5 million vehicles registered.
In contrast, Poland remains one of the slowest adopters of electromobility in Europe. While the total number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Poland reached 302,000 in July, they represent only about 5 percent of new registrations. Maciej Mazur, director of the Polish Association of New Mobility, noted that Poland ranks 30th out of 31 countries (including the UK) in terms of battery electric vehicle (BEV) market share.
Experts attribute Poland's lagging position to a lack of stable support policies and the conclusion of subsidy programs, which previously helped drive sales. Additionally, concerns regarding battery health and repair costs persist among consumers. However, a potential growth driver may be the influx of used electric vehicles imported from Western Europe as corporate fleets are updated over the next 18 to 24 months.
