Electric vehicles: technical advantages and fire safety challenges

As the fleet of electrified vehicles grows in Brazil, particularly in Goiás where units increased by over 40% in six months, discussions regarding safety and technical advantages are increasing.

Regarding safety, electric vehicle (EV) fires present unique challenges for emergency responders. Data from EV FireSafe indicates that between 2010 and June 2024, 511 passenger EV fires were recorded globally, with 489 involving battery ignition. Firefighters note that combating these fires requires specific procedures and often more water than conventional vehicle fires because high-voltage batteries can provide a continuous fuel source and release toxic gases.

On the technical side, electric motors offer distinct advantages over internal combustion engines due to their mechanical simplicity. By using an inverter to control current from the battery to the motor, EVs eliminate complex components such as pistons, valves, and exhaust systems. This reduction in moving parts can lead to lower maintenance requirements and faster acceleration response.
