Electric vehicles threaten automotive repair industry

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to significantly impact the automotive repair and maintenance sector. Because EVs have fewer mechanical parts, they require less frequent servicing compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.

A report by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) suggests that mechanical repairs and maintenance could decrease by nearly 45% between 2020 and 2030 due to the rise of electric mobility. In Spain, where EVs currently represent just over 1% of the vehicle fleet, industry associations have expressed concern regarding the long-term viability of traditional workshops.

Representatives from the Spanish spare parts association, ANCERA, have warned that up to 70% of certain operations could disappear in the coming years. Additionally, technology firm Solera estimated that if the Spanish vehicle fleet becomes fully electric by 2050, the reduction in aftermarket revenue could reach 38%.
