Electrical incident at C. C. Sweeting High School injures three students

An electrical incident at C. C. Sweeting Senior High School in Nassau, Bahamas, resulted in injuries to three students and localized power outages. The incident occurred following the installation of additional air-conditioning units, which caused an electrical fault. According to Bahamas Power and Light (BPL), the building’s protection system failed to operate as intended, leading to a blown fuse at the distribution transformer.

Three students sustained minor injuries and were assessed by the school nurse. While the injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, parents were advised to seek further medical evaluation. The school was dismissed early, and power has been restored in some areas, though two buildings remain isolated until electrical issues are corrected.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Chester Cooper confirmed the incident, emphasizing that student safety is the priority. However, the Bahamas Union of Teachers has raised concerns regarding the predictability of the event, noting that teachers had protested over electrical safety issues at the school as recently as two weeks ago. Union President Belinda Wilson stated that concerns regarding the school's electrical infrastructure have been raised since 2023.
