Electrical outages disrupt water supplies in Mazatlán and Mérida
Severe electrical outages caused by storms and technical failures have disrupted water supply operations in several Mexican regions.
In Mazatlán, Sinaloa, heavy rains and electrical activity on October 28 impacted pumping systems and water treatment plants. The Municipal Board of Potable Water and Sewerage (JUMAPAM) reported that 12 rural communities, including Los Llanitos, El Salto, and El Tiro, faced water shortages due to the loss of power for pumping equipment. JUMAPAM is coordinating with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to restore service.
In Mérida, Yucatán, a power failure has temporarily disabled the Mérida II Water Treatment Plant. The Water and Sewerage Board of Yucatán (Japay) warned that more than 40 neighborhoods and residential developments could experience low pressure or total water service interruptions. Affected areas include Pedregales de Nueva Mulsay, San Lorenzo, and various sectors within the Carmelitas and Mulsay districts. Service restoration depends on the CFE's ability to stabilize the electrical grid.
