Electrical safety: Appliances that should be plugged directly into wall outlets

Using extension cords for high-power household appliances can lead to overheating, damaged installations, and fire risks. While low-consumption devices like chargers and lamps are generally safe to use with extensions, appliances that utilize powerful heaters, motors, or operate continuously should be plugged directly into wall outlets.

Key appliances that require direct wall connection include:

• Refrigerators and freezers: These operate almost continuously and their compressors require significant energy, making stable power essential to avoid expensive repairs. • Kitchen appliances: Microwave ovens, toasters, and coffee makers can draw large amounts of electricity in short bursts, which may overwhelm standard extension cords. • Heating and cooling: Electric heaters and air conditioning units are among the highest energy consumers and should be connected directly to the wall. If an extension cord must be used, it must be specifically rated for the device's power requirements. • Personal care: Hair dryers can consume high amounts of electricity quickly, posing a risk if used with inadequate extension cords, especially in bathrooms near water.
