Electrical safety: Understanding residential outlet wattage limits

In the United States, standard residential power outlets typically have a rating of 15 amps and 120 volts, providing a total of 1,800 watts. Outlets in kitchens, laundry rooms, and garages often feature 20-amp ratings, which can supply up to 2,400 watts.

To prevent overheating and tripped breakers, the National Electrical Code (NEC) recommends following the 80% continuous load rule. This rule states that for loads lasting three hours or more, the current should not exceed 80% of the circuit's maximum capacity. This limits 15-amp circuits to 1,440 watts and 20-amp circuits to 1,920 watts.

Overloading outlets poses a significant fire risk. Data from the National Fire Protection Association indicates that between 17% and 30% of home structure fires originating in living rooms and bedrooms were caused by electrical equipment. Overloading causes heat buildup that can deteriorate wiring and lead to electrical arcing.
