Electrician rescued after being trapped 130 feet inside Illinois sign

An electrician, AJ Gow, was rescued after being trapped inside a 130-foot gas station sign in Wilmington, Illinois, during a hot July afternoon. The incident occurred while Gow was performing routine maintenance at a Petro Travel Center. After requesting a coworker to bring water and a fan, the lift mechanism malfunctioned, leaving him stranded at a height of approximately 40 meters.

As temperatures rose inside the metal structure and hours passed without water, Gow experienced heat exhaustion and intense fear. He recorded emotional farewell messages for his wife and children, fearing he would not survive.

Local fire departments were initially unable to reach him as their ladder trucks only extended to 100 feet. The Illinois State Police eventually escorted a larger replacement boom lift from Joliet to the scene. After a six-hour ordeal, technical rescue teams successfully transferred Gow to safety; he was reported to be uninjured.
