Electricians warn against using power strips for high-consumption appliances
Electricians are warning homeowners against plugging high-consumption appliances into standard power strips to prevent overheating, electrical damage, and potential fires.
Experts have identified several categories of devices that should be plugged directly into wall outlets. Refrigerators and freezers require stable, continuous power; using a power strip can cause fuses to blow or damage compressors due to voltage fluctuations. Microwave ovens, despite short operating times, draw significant energy—often between 12 and 15 amps—which can exceed the capacity of standard power strips.
Other high-risk items include heating appliances such as toasters, coffee makers, and electric heaters. These devices can cause insulation to melt or lead to power strips catching fire. Experts recommend checking manufacturer guidelines and prioritizing direct wall connections for any appliance with a heating element or a motor.
