Electricidade de Moçambique restores power to 470,000 Maputo customers after high‑voltage line fault
A conductor rupture on a main high‑voltage line on Sunday at about 17:41 caused an outage that left roughly 470,000 customers in Maputo city and the surrounding province without electricity. Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) mobilised technical teams immediately, securing the infrastructure and using alternative routes to restore supply. By 18:05 power began to be fed back, and all affected households had electricity by 23:00 that night.
EDM representative João Batista Chapotoca confirmed that the line, which has a double‑circuit design, required complex repairs and that one circuit had to remain offline during daylight hours, potentially causing brief interruptions for some users. The outage impacted neighborhoods such as Hulene, Mahotas, Baixa in the city, and Malhampsene, Congolote, Matlemele and other areas of Matola. Final damage assessments and cost estimates are still being compiled.
