Electricidade de Moçambique targets 420,000 new connections by 2026

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) aims to establish 420,000 new electrical connections by the end of 2026. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately two million citizens across Mozambique, supporting the national goal of achieving universal energy access by 2030.

Currently, about 22.7 million people, or 66.9% of the population, have access to electricity. This is a significant increase from the 9.8 million recorded in 2019. The expansion is driven by the ‘Energia para Todos’ (Energy for All) program, which utilizes national grid expansion, mini-grids, and solar systems to reach rural and peri-urban areas.

While all 11 provincial capitals and 154 district headquarters are electrified, efforts continue to cover remaining administrative posts. Additionally, EDM Chairman Joaquim Henrique Ou-chim announced the creation of a rapid response unit to mitigate the impact of natural disasters during the rainy season, following previous infrastructure damages that resulted in significant financial losses.
