Electricidade de Moçambique urged to adapt to climate challenges

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) marked its 49th anniversary with a workshop involving government officials, academics, and former employees to discuss the company's progress and future direction. The event served as a launch for celebrations marking its upcoming half-century of operation since its founding in 1977.

During the proceedings, António Manda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, challenged the state-owned utility to adapt to climate change. This urgency follows the expenditure of over $46 million in the last eight years to repair energy infrastructure destroyed by cyclones.

EDM Board Chairman Joaquim Ou-chim emphasized a new era of technological innovation and scientific integration. Meanwhile, former National Director of Energy Pascoal Bacela warned against the risks of long-term dependence on external donations and subsidies to reach the goal of universal electrification by 2030. Other participants advocated for maintaining the company's state-owned, vertically integrated structure to ensure national energy supply.
