Electricité de Guinée contractors protest for direct hiring

Contractors of the state-owned utility Electricité de Guinée (EDG) have staged protests demanding direct employment after years of service. Workers, some with up to seven years of experience, gathered at EDG offices in Conakry and regional prefectures, saying they lack permanent status, salary upgrades, professional classification and social benefits. Their spokesperson, Daouda Condé, said the group refused to sign proposed indefinite‑duration contracts that did not improve conditions.

After the initial demonstration on 4 August 2026, EDG’s senior management met the protestors behind closed doors on 5 August, but the talks ended without an agreement. The contractors announced they will continue their mobilisation until concrete responses are provided. A further meeting is scheduled for the following Tuesday, where the company is expected to present its position on the demands.
