Electricité du Liban to cut power to state institutions
The board of directors of Electricité du Liban (EDL) has decided to cut electricity supplies to public administrations, state institutions, and independent services, including water utilities, starting Monday, November 2, 2026. This decision follows repeated warnings regarding unpaid debts owed to the utility.
Governmental hospitals are exempt from this measure. The outstanding debts owed by state entities are estimated at approximately $300 million, though water utilities have recently paid $50 million toward their shares.
The move comes amid rising global fuel prices and increased operational costs for power plants. Energy and Water Minister Jo الصدّي has previously advocated for several measures to address the crisis, including adopting a floating electricity tariff based on oil price fluctuations and ensuring the state covers costs related to regional exemptions.
