Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko launches consultation on plug-in generation

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko has launched a consultation to review New Zealand’s electricity rules regarding emerging generation technologies and distributed generation connection processes.

A primary focus of the review is ‘plug-in generation’, also known as ‘balcony solar’. This technology could allow renters and apartment owners, who are often excluded from traditional rooftop solar, to access self-generation. While currently prohibited under a WorkSafe notice, the government is reviewing this position.

The Authority aims to ensure the Electricity Industry Participation Code is prepared for future availability of these technologies without creating unnecessary barriers. The consultation will address network impacts, consumer information, export arrangements, and potential registration requirements. Additionally, the Authority is proposing changes to improve the efficiency of small-scale distributed generation connections and provide clarity on export limits.
