Electricity costs and grid deployment speed drive energy transition debates
Energy policy discussions are increasingly focusing on the relationship between electricity costs, supply speed, and decarbonization goals. In the United Kingdom, high electricity prices are identified as a significant barrier to the transition toward clean energy. While the government aims for a 95 per cent clean grid by 2030, the electricity sector accounts for only 10 per cent of total UK emissions. The more substantial contributors are domestic transport and building heating. High costs are currently hindering the adoption of heat pumps and electric vehicles, as consumers do not see sufficient savings compared to traditional methods.
In the United States, the focus has shifted toward “speed to power” as electricity demand begins to rise. To meet near-term demand, experts suggest that policymakers prioritize advancing mature projects already in the pipeline, such as renewables, battery storage, and natural gas facilities. Addressing inefficient approval processes and modernizing grid interconnection can help move these viable projects through the queue faster, potentially boosting new supply by tens of gigawatts per year through 2030.
