Electricity distributors address rising utility bills

Electricity distribution companies (EDEs) have responded to concerns regarding rising utility bills, following comments from Chamber of Deputies President Alfredo Pacheco. Pacheco noted that his personal electricity bill increased from 21,000 to 30,000 pesos, prompting calls for a review of billing processes.

The EDEs issued a statement clarifying that the increase in billing amounts is due to higher energy consumption driven by high summer temperatures rather than changes in electricity rates. They noted that rate adjustments have been suspended since March 2022.

Increased usage, particularly for air conditioning and refrigeration, can also cause some users to move into higher tariff blocks based on total consumption. Data shows that electrical demand reached a record 4,330.80 megawatts as of July 30, 2026, representing an approximately 10.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
