Electricity grid congestion impacts Dutch housing and infrastructure

Electricity grid congestion is impacting housing and infrastructure development in several Dutch regions. In De Wolden, the grid operator Enexis has reported that certain areas currently lack the transport capacity required for new connections. While housing is categorized as a priority service, the municipality is investigating ways to proceed with developments despite limitations caused by material shortages and a lack of specialized personnel.

In The Hague, the situation is similarly critical. Alderman Isabelle Broeders stated that the city may need to undergo significant excavations, potentially affecting one-third of the city over the next decade, to install hundreds of new transformer stations. The grid operator Stedin is responsible for strengthening the network, but current capacity limits mean new businesses and homes may face delays. To manage the shortage, officials are exploring creative solutions such as local battery storage and independent micro-grids.
