Electricity pricing and consumption strategies in Romania
In Romania, the cost of electricity depends heavily on individual consumer contracts and the type of tariff selected. Following the complete liberalization of the electricity market on July 1, 2025, after the expiration of price capping measures, household consumers pay based on the specific agreements made with their providers.
While some consumers may benefit from differentiated hourly rates, those on fixed-rate contracts will pay the same price regardless of when appliances are used. For those with variable tariffs, scheduling high-energy tasks—such as running washing machines or dishwashers—during off-peak hours, typically at night or during specific daytime intervals, can reduce costs.
Additionally, high photovoltaic production on sunny days can lower wholesale market prices during certain daylight hours, though this does not automatically translate to lower household bills unless reflected in the consumer's specific contract. Current final prices, including VAT, are estimated to range between approximately 1.03 and 1.5 lei/kWh, depending on the provider, distribution zone, and offer type.
