Utility services face instability across Latin American energy and banking sectors
Various regions are facing significant challenges regarding energy and utility services. In Mexico, recurrent power outages in areas like Playa del Carmen and Ciudad Victoria have prompted residents to demand better communication and infrastructure investment from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). President Claudia Sheinbaum attributed some outages to increased summer demand from air conditioning, noting that while complaints have decreased, certain zones require more transmission investment.
In Argentina, the electrical system is struggling with record generation costs and declining tariff coverage, creating a dual-speed economy where industrial demand grows while small businesses face higher costs. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, new banking commission adjustments are causing concern for low-income users due to the impact of fixed fees on small transactions.
In Panama, the Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos (ASEP) is pressuring distributors like Naturgy and ENSA to resolve issues regarding high consumption reports and billing clarity to improve service quality.
