Electricity social tariff registration issues in Maranhão and Tocantins
In Maranhão, over 274,000 beneficiaries of the Social Electricity Tariff (Tarifa Social de Energia Elétrica) must update their registration data to avoid losing their discounts. According to Equatorial Maranhão, which distributes energy in the state, 67,555 of these pending registrations are located in the Grande Ilha region, including São Luís, São José de Ribamar, and Paço do Lumiar. São Luís alone has 48,335 pending records.
To maintain the benefit, consumers must comply with Aneel Resolution No. 1,147/2025. Requirements include having the utility bill in the name of a family member registered in the federal government’s CadÚnico, and ensuring the municipality associated with the Social Identification Number (NIS) matches the consumer unit's location. Equatorial Maranhão recommends updates every two years or whenever family compositions change.
In Tocantins, approximately 94,000 families that meet the criteria for the social tariff are not yet registered. Energisa Tocantins reports that 93,579 families are eligible but currently lack access, with the highest numbers of unregistered eligible families in Palmas, Araguaína, and Gurupi.
The Social Tariff is available to CadÚnico-registered families with a monthly income of up to half a minimum wage per person, seniors or people with disabilities receiving the BPC, and families with members dependent on continuous electrical medical equipment. A separate Social Discount is available for families with incomes between half and one minimum wage per person.
