Electrification viewed as solution to European energy crisis

The European electricity industry is advocating for accelerated electrification across transport, heating, and industrial sectors as a long-term response to recurring energy crises. Kristian Ruby, Secretary General of Eurelectric, suggests that shifting toward domestic clean electricity production is essential to reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and maintaining European industrial competitiveness.

However, the transition faces significant hurdles, including high electricity costs, investment delays, insufficient energy storage capacity, and the need to protect infrastructure from evolving security threats. Amidst geopolitical instability and the threat of a difficult winter, industry leaders are calling for targeted state support for households and businesses facing high energy costs.
