Global automotive markets see rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption

The global automotive market is experiencing a significant shift toward electrification and new technologies. In Spain, the electrified vehicle segment grew by 28% in August 2026, with total electrified registrations approaching 210,000 units for the year. While electric vehicles (BEVs) represent only about 1.3% of the total Spanish vehicle fleet, the flow of new registrations is outpacing the existing stock. The used car market in Spain also saw growth, with second-hand electric and plug-in hybrid sales rising significantly.

In Ecuador, vehicle sales reached a record high in August 2026, with electric vehicle sales surging by over 500% compared to the previous year. Similarly, Colombia is seeing a transformation in urban mobility, driven by the lower operating costs of electric alternatives.

In the United Kingdom, the market saw growth in electrified models, with BEVs capturing nearly 30% of new registrations in August. Additionally, the launch of a supervised autonomous taxi service by Wayve and Uber in London marks a step toward driverless mobility.

Challenges remain, particularly regarding infrastructure. Professional drivers indicate that charging waits exceeding 24 minutes are considered excessive, and the scarcity of high-power charging points remains a barrier to adoption.
