Bulgaria doubles battery storage capacity to 6 GW

Bulgaria has emerged as a regional energy leader, earning the nickname ‘Battery of the Balkans’ after doubling its electricity storage capacity from 3 GW to approximately 6 GW within a single year. This expansion was driven by approximately €700 million in European Union funding and regulatory changes that attracted private investment.

The increased capacity allows the country to store solar energy generated during the day for use during evening peak demand. Consequently, Bulgaria’s electricity exports rose by 62% compared to the previous year, reaching 3.5 TWh. These exports provided critical support to neighboring countries, including Romania, during summer heatwaves when power networks were under pressure and local production was affected by drought.

Nikola Gazdov, chairman of the Association for Production, Storage and Trading of Electricity (APSTE), stated that battery storage has transitioned from a desirable option to a necessity. While Bulgaria has rapidly scaled its infrastructure, experts note that the sector's growth is narrowing price differentials and shifting the focus toward balancing markets.
