Latin America surpasses 1 million electrified vehicles
Latin America and the Caribbean have reached a significant milestone in the energy transition, with the regional fleet of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) surpassing 1 million units as of June 2026. According to OLACDE, these electrified light vehicles now account for 10% of all light vehicle sales in the region. The electric bus fleet has also expanded to 10,685 units, with Chile leading the sector.
Brazil is a primary driver of this growth. The country reached a historic milestone on September 24, 2026, with 1 million electrified light vehicles registered since 2012, according to ABVE. In August 2026 alone, Brazil saw 57,386 new registrations, representing a 184% year-over-year increase. The Brazilian electrified fleet includes 639,133 units, split nearly evenly between BEVs (49%) and plug-in hybrids (51%).
To support this growing fleet, Brazil's charging infrastructure has expanded significantly, reaching 29,896 public and semi-public points by August 2026. This represents a 77% increase over the previous year. The network is seeing a shift toward high-power DC fast charging, which now accounts for 38.2% of all installed points. While the Southeast region holds 42.4% of the national network, the North, Northeast, and Midwest regions are seeing a higher proportional installation of fast-charging stations.
