Electronic Arts closes BioWare and cancels Mass Effect game

Electronic Arts (EA) has shut down the legendary RPG developer BioWare and cancelled the upcoming fifth Mass Effect title. Analysts suggest the closure is a direct consequence of the approximately $18 billion in debt EA incurred following an acquisition led by a consortium including the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners.

To manage interest payments of roughly $1.8 billion annually—which exceeds the company's $1.5 billion annual EBITDA—EA has committed to cutting $700 million in annual costs. Analysts note that long-term development projects like Mass Effect are vulnerable in this high-debt environment as the company shifts focus toward recurring revenue, live-service games, and Asian markets.

Despite the studio's closure, Amazon MGM Studios reportedly intends to proceed with its Mass Effect streaming series. The project, which explores a new story set after the original trilogy, remains in development with its creative team intact. Meanwhile, Mass Effect-themed crossover content has been removed from the menus of Battlefield 6 following the announcement.
