Electronic Arts shuts down BioWare and cancels Mass Effect 5

Electronic Arts has announced the closure of BioWare, the historic Canadian video game developer founded in 1995, as part of a global corporate restructuring. The decision results in approximately 400 layoffs across EA studios, including roughly 50 employees at BioWare. This move follows EA’s $55 billion acquisition by a consortium including the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in August 2026.

The shutdown has led to the official cancellation of the next Mass Effect title, reportedly known as “Mass Effect: Universe.” Following the announcement, an internal pre-production trailer for the project leaked on Reddit. The footage, which Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier confirmed as authentic, suggests the game would have been set 600 years after the Reaper War and featured a new customizable N7 protagonist alongside a returning Liara T’Soni.

Details from the leaked project indicate a narrative focus on a galactic cold war involving the Geth as a rising superpower. While the studio's closure ends development on the new Mass Effect, the franchise's future remains uncertain. Fans have launched a petition, #SaveMassEffect, which has garnered over 100,000 signatures, urging EA to either fund the series internally or license the intellectual property to another studio. Additionally, an Amazon MGM Studios live-action Mass Effect series is reportedly still in development.
