Electronic waste concerns rise as wired technology sees a fashion resurgence

The accumulation of electronic waste (e-waste), such as non-functional mobile phones, computers, and chargers, presents a growing environmental challenge. These devices contain recoverable materials like copper, aluminum, and plastic, but improper disposal through burning or landfilling can contaminate soil and water, posing health risks.

In the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources reported that the country generated approximately 67,000 tons of e-waste in 2019, according to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020. This highlights the need for specialized treatment and improved collection options for end-of-life electronics.

Simultaneously, consumer trends are seeing a resurgence in older technology. Despite the industry shift toward wireless audio following Apple’s removal of the 3.5mm jack in 2016, wired headphones are experiencing a fashion-driven comeback. Influencers and celebrities are adopting wired earphones as a trend, leading to a 3% increase in wired headphone sales in 2025 and a 20% revenue growth in the first six weeks of 2026.
