Electronic waste recycling and market values
The management of electronic waste (e-waste) presents both environmental challenges and economic opportunities. Globally, more than 50 million tons of e-waste are generated annually, containing toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium that can cause significant environmental damage if not handled correctly.
In Hungary, there are established systems for purchasing old electronics for cash. Estimated 2026 rates for scrap weight include approximately 47 HUF/kg for large household appliances, 50 HUF/kg for small appliances, and 144 HUF/kg for used IT equipment. Certain components offer higher value; for instance, gold-plated RAM can fetch up to 17,000 HUF/kg, while laptop motherboards or processors may yield around 4,000 HUF/kg. However, the price drops significantly if devices are dismantled or missing essential parts, such as motors or cables.
Promoting the resale and refurbishment of used devices, such as laptops, is highlighted as a key strategy for sustainability. Recycling allows for the recovery of valuable metals like copper and aluminum, reducing the energy required for new manufacturing and extending the lifecycle of existing technology.
