Eleonora Meleti sparks controversy over employer rights remarks

Eleonora Meleti, a New Democracy MEP and shadow rapporteur for the European People's Party, has sparked significant political controversy following her remarks at the European Parliament. During a debate on a report regarding psychosocial risks, stress, and mental health in the workplace, Meleti stated, “Do you know how many employers are blackmailed by unprofessional employees?”

Meleti defended her comments on social media, arguing that her words were taken out of context and that critics are “cutting, sewing, and distorting” her positions to paint her as an enemy of labor rights. She emphasized that the report, which was adopted by the Parliament, also focuses on protecting workers from bullying, harassment, and burnout, and that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) also face psychosocial challenges.

Opposition leaders have criticized her stance. Alexis Tsipras described her as a “modern Marie Antoinette,” while PASOK's Pavlos Christidis questioned how far she is from the reality of the working class. The debate highlights the tension between addressing worker protections and recognizing the pressures faced by employers in the modern economy.
