Elephant Jovi dies after month-long intensive care in Riau, Indonesia

Jovi, a 46‑year‑old male elephant at the Minas Elephant Training Center in Riau Province, Indonesia, died on 3 August 2026 after more than a month of intensive veterinary treatment. The animal suffered digestive and upper‑respiratory infections that progressed to severe muscle weakness (myopathy).

Acting Head of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Ujang Holisudin, said Jovi had been a key figure in reducing human‑wildlife conflicts across the province. Veterinary coordinator Rini Deswita described the treatment regimen, which included round‑the‑clock intravenous fluids, vitamins, antibiotics, anti‑inflammatories, amino acids and supportive care. Despite temporary improvement, Jovi’s condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead at 20:47 local time. A post‑mortem examination was performed and the remains were buried according to conservation protocols.
