Elephant Joymoti airlifted to Vantara for specialized treatment

Joymoti, a 53-year-old elephant, has been airlifted to Vantara in Jamnagar for specialized medical treatment. The elephant was severely injured after being swept away by intense floodwaters in Nagaland in July.

Joymoti suffers from multiple serious wounds, including significant damage to her right eye and mobility issues caused by an old injury to her hind leg. The decision to airlift her was made to avoid a long and exhausting road journey, marking what is described as the first rescue of its kind in India.

Vantara has clarified that this is not a permanent relocation, but a temporary measure to provide necessary medical examinations, wound care, and nutrition. To improve future wildlife response, Vantara has proposed the establishment of three wildlife veterinary centers, including a dedicated facility for elephants in Assam, to ensure injured animals can receive care closer to their natural habitats.
