Elephant seal appears on São Conrado Beach in Rio de Janeiro

An elephant seal appeared on São Conrado Beach in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro on Friday, October 2, 2026. The presence of the marine mammal prompted the Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Department to deploy an operation to isolate the area and ensure the safety of both beachgoers and the animal.

Authorities used purple flags, the international standard for indicating sensitive or dangerous marine fauna, to establish a security perimeter. Experts from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) suggested the young specimen may have been carried by cold currents from the south, possibly originating from the Valdés Peninsula in Argentina.

Biologists from AquaRio and UERJ warned the public to maintain a safe distance, avoid making noise, and refrain from feeding the animal to prevent stress. While the seal appeared slow while resting on the sand, specialists noted that these mammals are agile over short distances and can be territorial and aggressive, particularly males.
