Elfyn Evans warns of unpredictable conditions at Rally Paraguay
WRC championship leader Elfyn Evans has expressed caution ahead of the Rally Paraguay, citing the unpredictable nature of the terrain. Despite his current standing in the championship, the Toyota driver is wary of the surface conditions encountered during previous participations.
Evans noted that while the special stages appear straightforward on paper due to long straights and numerous intersections, the polished clay surface creates significant challenges. The grip levels can change rapidly, making the race difficult to navigate. He highlighted that during previous events, rain exacerbated these issues, turning the stages into a “lottery” due to the near-total lack of traction.
As the championship leader, Evans faces the additional challenge of starting first on the gravel stages, a position that requires him to “clean” the road for subsequent drivers. This role can be a disadvantage in dry conditions, though precipitation may occasionally mitigate the gap between the opening drivers and those following later.
