Elgiganten launches Treasure Collection to resell recovered electronics
Elgiganten has launched the ‘Treasure Collection’ initiative in collaboration with the environmental organization Hands2Ocean to highlight the issue of electronic waste. The project involves recovering discarded electronics, such as iPhones and vintage radios, from the bottom of Swedish waters, including Lake Mälaren.
Hands2Ocean has recovered approximately 490 tons of batteries and electronics from Swedish waters to date. Items that are deemed functional are inspected by Elgiganten technicians, repaired, and refurbished for resale. Products that cannot be restored are sent for material recycling.
A survey conducted by Verian for Elgiganten revealed a discrepancy in consumer behavior: while 78 percent of Swedes believe they manage their old electronics responsibly, 85 percent admit to keeping unused gadgets at home. The initiative aims to promote a circular economy by making recycling and product life extension more accessible.
