Eli Lilly breaks ground on $6.5 billion Houston manufacturing campus

Eli Lilly has officially broken ground on a $6.5 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing campus located in northeast Houston, Texas. The 236-acre site, situated in the Generation Park area near Beltway 8, is designed to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using small-molecule synthetic processes.

A primary focus of the facility is to scale the production of orforglipron, a once-daily oral GLP-1 medication branded as Foundayo. Unlike injectable peptide-based treatments, this medication utilizes small molecules for long-term weight management.

The project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and bolster the regional life sciences sector. While specific buildings are slated for completion around November 2027, the company aims for the full campus to be operational by 2030. To support the new site, Lilly has also announced investments in local training and scholarships to meet the demand for specialized chemical synthesis and laboratory personnel.
