Eli Lilly completes acquisition of AtaiBeckley
Eli Lilly has completed its acquisition of AtaiBeckley, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company specializing in rapid-acting neuroplastogens for mental health conditions. This move is intended to expand Lilly’s neuroscience pipeline into new classes of investigational therapies, specifically targeting treatments that promote neuroplasticity to allow for potentially faster and more durable therapeutic effects with less frequent dosing.
A key asset in the acquisition is BPL-003, an investigational therapy currently being developed for treatment-resistant depression. This acquisition follows Lilly’s recent agreement to purchase Merida Biosciences for up to $2.88 billion in cash, a move aimed at strengthening its early-stage research in immunology. These strategic acquisitions signal the company’s intent to diversify its portfolio beyond its core diabetes and obesity medication business into high-demand therapeutic fields such as mental health and immunology.
