Eli Lilly reaches $1 trillion market cap on drug sales growth

Eli Lilly has achieved a historic milestone as the first healthcare company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization. This growth is primarily driven by its portfolio of diabetes and weight-loss medications, specifically Mounjaro and Zepbound.

In the second quarter, the company reported a 48% year-over-year revenue increase to $23 billion. Sales for Mounjaro rose 91% to $9.9 billion, while Zepbound sales grew 46% to $4.9 billion. These two products, which utilize the active ingredient tirzepatide, account for nearly 65% of the company's total revenue.

Despite this momentum, analysts note a high level of concentration in these two brands. The company faces potential risks from pharmaceutical competitors developing rival GLP-1 therapies, which could impact pricing power and revenue growth rates, similar to trends observed with competitor Novo Nordisk.
