Eli Lilly's Foundayo pill receives first European approval in the UK
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has become the first European regulator to authorize Eli Lilly’s oral GLP-1 medication, orforglipron (brand name Foundayo). The tablet is approved for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or between 27 and 30 with related comorbidities, as well as for improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
This development marks a significant shift in the weight-loss market, moving from injectable medications like Zepbound and Wegovy toward more convenient oral therapies. Foundayo offers a potential advantage over some competitors by having no food restrictions, whereas Wegovy requires users to abstain from eating for 30 minutes after administration.
Parallel research is expanding the understanding of GLP-1 drugs. Clinical studies on the compound aleniglipron have shown significant weight reduction in adults, while neurological research suggests these drugs may influence the brain's lateral septum, potentially reducing cravings related to addiction. Additionally, studies in mice indicate that the long-term metabolic benefits of semaglutide may depend on the continued function of specific hunger-regulating neurons.
