Eli Lilly's Retatrutide Shows 20-22% Weight Loss in Phase III Trials
Eli Lilly announced positive topline results from its two Phase III obesity trials, TRIUMPH‑2 and TRIUMPH‑3. In TRIUMPH‑2, adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity lost up to 20.8% of body weight after 80 weeks; in TRIUMPH‑3, participants with severe obesity and cardiovascular disease lost up to 22.6%, with accompanying improvements in HbA1c, triglycerides, blood pressure and inflammatory markers. Cardiovascular event data showed a non‑significant trend toward fewer major adverse events versus placebo. The company said the data support a planned biologics‑license application to the U.S. FDA in the first quarter of 2027. Commentary accompanying the release noted that the United States is losing clinical‑trial volume to Australia and China, raising concerns about competitive pressures in later‑stage drug development.
