Eli Roth clarifies use of AI in ‘Ice Cream Man’

Horror director Eli Roth is facing scrutiny regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence in his new film, ‘Ice Cream Man’. The controversy centers on the transparency of the production process following discussions about specific animated sequences.

Initially, Roth suggested in an interview that certain black-and-white cartoon sequences were created through a traditional process involving his own drawings and a team of classical animators. However, after viewers noted suspicious animation styles, Roth issued a clarification, stating, “I misspoke. AI was used in very few places in a few scenes.”

The debate has extended beyond the technical application of the tools to include the expectations of openness within the film industry. While Roth clarified that AI was used only for a small portion of specific scenes to realize his creative vision, he has not disclosed the exact extent or which specific sequences were affected. Observers have also pointed to the presence of Dark Half, a company specializing in AI-supported visual effects, in the film's credits.
