Elia strengthens Belgium's power grid with Brabo III line and Zaventem substation

Elia has put into service the Brabo III high‑voltage transmission line, a cross‑border link between Belgium and the Netherlands. The line, running from Kruibeke to the Dutch border, was inaugurated at the Port of Antwerp in the presence of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. It is intended to boost electricity exchange, support the industrial shift from fossil fuels to electrification, and improve price stability and supply security by integrating the European grid.

In parallel, Elia is constructing a new high‑voltage substation at Zaventem (Zaventem Recyclagepark) to address growing electricity demand in the Flemish Rand around Brussels. The project includes an underground cable network that will connect existing stations by 2027. Elia cites rising demand from electric mobility, heating and industrial processes as the driver. Environmental measures accompany the build, with a green buffer and a planned expansion of nearby forest area to offset tree removal.
