Elias Valtoselle discusses randomness in basketball
Finnish basketball player Elias Valtoselle reflected on the role of randomness in sports following a controversial moment during a match against Sweden. A year ago, during a game in Tampere, Valtoselle missed a layup with 43 seconds remaining, but a referee's whistle called a foul on Swedish NBA guard Pelle Larsson.
The decision resulted in Larsson fouling out and allowed Valtoselle to secure a free throw, ultimately helping Finland secure a 90–93 victory. Valtoselle described such unpredictable moments as ‘the salt of ball games,’ noting that players must trust that consistent effort increases their chances over the long term.
Valtoselle has since become a key player for the Finnish national team, contributing significantly to their fourth-place finish in the recent European Championships, including crucial shots in a victory against Serbia. His recent season was interrupted by a shoulder and clavicle injury sustained during a World Cup qualifier against France.
