Elina Svitolina and Gaël Monfils announce separation

Professional tennis players Elina Svitolina and Gaël Monfils have announced the end of their marriage. In a joint announcement shared on social media, the couple confirmed their separation after being married since 2021.

Svitolina, the world No. 6, cited the profound emotional toll of the ongoing war in Ukraine as a primary factor in her decision. She described experiencing sleepless nights, doubt, and a sense of losing herself due to the conflict. She noted that while Monfils provided immense support, she needed to find her way back to herself in a way that was not possible within the marriage.

Both athletes emphasized that they remain a family for their four-year-old daughter, Skai, and will continue to co-parent her. Svitolina clarified that the decision was not about blame, but rather a personal necessity to seek happiness and stability.

The announcement follows the recent retirement of Monfils, whose departure from professional tennis was confirmed after he was listed as a retired player by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.
