Elis Lima Carneiro, Brazilian influencer with rare aging syndrome, dies at 5

Elis Lima Carneiro, a five-year-old Brazilian social media influencer, has died in Boa Vista, Roraima. She and her twin sister, Eloá, were the first twins known to be diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition that causes rapid cellular aging in children.

Reports indicate the cause of death was a generalized pulmonary infection. The family, who gained a significant following of over 1.4 million people on Instagram by documenting the twins' lives and medical journeys, announced the news via social media. Her brother, Guilherme Lago, shared that Elis had fought strongly and left a legacy of visibility for rare diseases.

Progeria is a fatal condition characterized by symptoms such as hair loss, skin changes, and cardiovascular issues. While there is no cure, treatments exist to improve quality of life. The condition affects approximately 1 in 4 to 8 million people.
