Elisa to phase out 2G networks in Estonia by 2028

Telecommunications provider Elisa has announced plans to shut down its 2G network in Estonia by 2028. This follows the scheduled decommissioning of 3G technology at the end of 2024, as the company transitions services toward more modern, secure, and energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks.

While most modern smartphones already utilize 4G or 5G, Elisa warns that certain specialized devices may be affected. These include security and alarm systems, electricity and water meters, payment terminals, and various industrial or real estate automation devices that may have been installed over a decade ago and rely solely on 2G connectivity.

Toomas Polli, head of Elisa's technology unit, stated that the transition is a natural step in mobile network evolution. He advised companies and device owners to identify which technologies their hardware uses and to plan for necessary upgrades to avoid service disruptions.
